I’ve known this for a few months after it got rumored on Icethetics (via Greg Wyshynski’s Yahoo! blog), but the Kings are looking to make the current third jersey — the minimalist logo with the silver and black scheme that harkens back to the Gretzky-era — the main jersey for next season.
A white one will be created, likely in the same style, for road games. No word if it will have black lettering or the silver lettering from the early Gretzky era that was allegedly harder to read for NHL officials. God help us if they do that ugly lettering scheme that Philadelphia and Buffalo use (as the artist chose in the above photo), like somebody just used tape to pin a name on the jersey.
And the No. 3 jersey? Nope, not the ’70s era Forum Blue and gold. It will be the current home jersey, writes Rich Hammond at the LA Kings Insider.
Myself, I could live with the new mains — it took me a while to get over the somewhat lazy logo. But I’d prefer the third jersey be the one from the ’70s, in which the Kings went 3-1 in this season. Even though I know some folks will think it’s some newfangled Lakers’ gear. Why?
Because no matter how nice purple black and silver look, or that big fancy crown, the thing that kills me about the Kings current jersey is the GLITTER effect on the sweater. You don’t notice it on the television, but in person, that sheen on the silver just distracts me. I just couldn’t bring myself to buy that jersey after noticing that. This coming from a guy who likes the glam rock/metal look (and sound); I don’t like it on my hockey team though. Though I guess KISS could make it look tough.
But no wonder the rest of the NHL fandom calls them the “Queens.”
In the meantime, make your vote known at LA Kings Insider (so far the Forum Blue and gold is running away with the lead over the silver and black and current home jersey). And check out Icethetics’ ideas for the Kings’ alleged new jersey next season, using gray shoulder coloring on the white jersey’s shoulder to evoke memories of the ’80s Triple Crown days. That would be cool.
By the way, had to hold myself from linking an image of someone’s Kings’ jersey idea I saw on a Google Image search. Someone mixed the ’70s crown, a silver and black with Forum Blue and gold color scheme, and the legendary “Burger King” logo on the shoulder blades. Now that’s imagination. I couldn’t bring myself to link it, so that’s your optional homework assignment. Happy Easter Egg hunting.
