The Kovalchuk fiasco isn’t quite over for New Jersey. The NHL fined the Devils $3 million and penalized them by taking two draft picks away over the next four years for signing Kovalchuk to the ludicrous deal they originally submitted. It is an impressive decision, and the attempt to get around the salary cap gets them the loss of a 3rd round pick in 2011, and a 1st round pick in a draft within the last four years. The Devils have also been fined $3 million, although because of the settlement with the NHLPA, that money won’t affect the Devils cap situation (a real bummer, since it would put them an incredible $6 million over the camp).
It’s a good call by the NHL, and I appreciate that they’re not backing down over their stance. Sucks to be a Devils fan to be sure, but the penalties are appropriate.
