Matt Greene Out Injured

Greene will be out for 3-4 months, including the beginning of the season after he underwent surgery to fix a problem with his shoulder. In the long-run it’s probably a good thing, since he’ll be in better shape and (hopefully) able to contribute more to the Los Angeles Kings when he gets back.

According to Rich Hammond, the problem was discovered after an examination due to “general wear and tear,” but they found much, much more. Greene was suffering from labrum and rotator-cuff injuries, bone spurs and arthritis. Though how they are going to do much for the arthritis is beyond me.

Greene has been overall quite solid on the backend, though he has virtually zero offensive upside. He’s a strong character player, as evidenced by his role as the assistant captain on the Kings. The surgery means that he will be out through at least October, and may not return until November or early December. Obviously that’s quite a loss, though it means two things in my mind:

  1. Lombardi almost must sign a veteran defenseman to help fill out the roster now. The line-up that we’ve got obviously will need a significant upgrade, and I’m not sure the Monarchs are the place from which that upgrade will come.
  2. Monarchs defensemen are officially on notice. With Greene out, and at least one top-4 defense slot open, this camp will be one of the most important in your life. A strong camp will almost certainly get you onto the team, and help solidify your role in the organization. Bring your A game boys, because you’ll never have a better shot.

So for my part I think he’ll either go after a decent defensive-defenseman via trade, though I wouldn’t rule out a one-year, incentive-heavy contract for Willie Mitchell or someone along those lines. Who do you want the Kings to go after to fill Greene’s slot at least temporarily? Comfortable bringing up two defenseman (or more) from Manchester? Think we need a veteran?
