Who’s got Olympic Fever? I know I do! Personally I dig the Olympics, because it’s 24-hour intense competition at the most elite levels. I love almost all the events, ESPECIALLY the ones with objective scoring systems. Of course the creme de la creme is the Olympic hockey. With the best players in the world coming together for some impressive games, it’s like having a week (or more) worth of All-star games. But here’s the kicker – THESE All-star games MATTER! Unlike the usual game where nobody gives two shits who wins, or what happens. These guys are playing for national pride and a gold medal!
Who’s going to win? It’s hard to say, though the favorites have to be Canada and Russia, with the two most talented teams in the world right now. Of course I’m not the first (and won’t be the last) to say it, but a hot goalie, or an impressive team performance over a short streak of games cna be the ultimate in such a short competition. The most important game? The quarterfinals. If a team wins the quarterfinal match, they play in TWO more games, and have two more chances to win a medal and get on the podium. If they lose? They’re out, and they had a disappointing (if not embarrassing) performance. It’s as key as a game gets, and frankly just about any team can be beaten in ONE game. Even Canada. Even Russia.
I’m rooting for the USA, not only because I live here (and am therefore contractually obligated to cheer for the Yanks), but also because of the Kings reps on the team. I’d love to see Doughty do well, and certainly wouldn’t begrudge Handzus a decent showing, but it’s all about the Brown, Johnson, Quick trio for me. Bring it home USA!
